Slain girls mother arrested in drug-bust.

Mother in a sad case of young girl who was abducted and murdered in April 2009 - Tori Stafford - has been arrested in a drug-bust in Woodstock ON.   It is noteworthy as the little girls Dad was IMHO treated as an unimportant player in the unfolding drama while the mother faced very little scrutiny or questions about her life or behaviour.  The father - Rodney Stafford - had been critical of the mothers drug issues.

Women - the unfunny sex

Again, better late than never.   Probably a re-run as the old fellow is in the last innings in his battle with cancer.

Why are men, taken on average and as a whole, funnier than women?

This sort of  follows up previous comments where men look benignly at women - because they know that when the rubber hits the road - MOST of the time you can't really count on the gals.  There are some can drag you out of the burning house after you lost consciousness - but not many.  And they will explain that they had to save their own asses first.

[I include the video below NOT because I am a Church of Scientology supporter, but because it seems to condone Violence against Men as perfectly acceptable by Women for their cheating Husbands.  On many levels it portrays a very disturbing double-standard from a group that purports to be "religious".]

Sons of Divorce Fare Worse Than Daughters

Better late than never:
A new study reports that men whose parents divorced before they were 18 are two to three times as likely to seriously consider taking their own lives as men whose parents were not divorced by that age.

Why can't women get ahead?

Occasionally I see feminist articles that "break rant" on ideology.   This is close.   Basically "Smart Girls" give up too early.  The explanation is that "Smart Girls" tend to receive praise for qualities such as “goodness” or “cleverness” — attributes that are either present or absent — rather than the kinds of messages boys receive assuring them that more effort will pay off, “you can do it if you try harder”.  As they get older they supposedly hesitate to take action because they don’t want to make waves or be labelled a bitch.  Women who want to get ahead get over the nice girl thing — particularly the bright ones. Perhaps.

I would say it depends if they are crushing their sisters or seducing their brothers.  It is well accepted that women hat to work for other women - preferring the "free pass" they get from men.  There is a natural "entente cordial" between men and women that allows us to work together so long as we don't push to hard.  But I believe properly motivated teams of men still are able to achieve much more than women - even in the Knowledge sector.

Sept 10 - Suicide Prevention Week

In 2009 *78% of suicides in Alberta were male1.
--------------------------------------------------
Suicide is a silent issue that affects thousands of people each year - including obviously those who are left behind.  There are more annual deaths by suicide in Alberta than motor vehicle accidents2.

On September 9th, the Edmonton Support network holds a "Lift the Silence" Event in conjunction with  National Suicide Prevention Week and it's own  bereavement programs.

I find it a bit ironic that their tag line is "Lift the Silence, Begin the Healing" as they appear to do anything but engage in active and healthy dialogue - but do encourage support survivor, prevention, and hope.

Who murdered Auturo GATTI?

Ok, the story is out there.

The mystery surrounding his death continues while his family is in a legal battle with his former wife over which will is valid.

Was it suicide - or was it murder?  This ex-Chicago cop thinks the latter - as does his brother and family. No-body but 10 men - they say - could have taken him as lightly as he went down that night in a Brazilian resort on July 11, 2009.

Whatever the outcome, there is an increasing focus on suicide in Sport. Over the summer there have been a string of them among NHL "enforcers" - Wade BELAK, Rick RYPIEN and Derek BOOGAARD - and attention has turned to the possibility the pounding the suffered from their on roles is a factor.  I am not so sure.

One thing I know - Gatti was a whirling dervish in the ring.

YAOW (Yet Another Odd Website)

This one is filled with interesting - if offbeat - observations and book reviews of every classic known.  I could spend alot of time browsing through this collection o personal musings.

Sex offenders paid to baby-sit?

That caught my eye (actually the link that it was under was "Illinois provides dating service to pedophiles")
My first thought was "I wonder how many dad's would have been available to babysit if they had been encouraged to in the 1st place - rather than be run off the property?".
